FAA Electrical DER for Aircraft Electrical Systems

Electrical power, EWIS and installation compliance, approved by a consultant DER.

Request a Consultation

Aries Aero Systems is led by an FAA Electrical Designated Engineering Representative (DER). We find compliance and approve electrical systems and installation data for STCs, amended type certificates and new aircraft programs.

Electrical DER work covers power generation and distribution, electrical load analysis, wiring and EWIS, and the installation of avionics and cabin equipment. Electrical findings often gate an entire STC, so we engage early.

Scope

What our Electrical DER does

Electrical load analysis

ELA review for normal, abnormal and emergency configurations, including bus loading, generator and battery capacity.

Power generation and distribution

Compliance for generating systems, distribution, circuit protection and master switch arrangements.

EWIS

Wire selection, separation, routing, identification and protection, and EWIS instructions for continued airworthiness.

Equipment installation

Avionics, antennas, cabin electrical and IFE installations, including bonding, grounding and circuit protection.

Electrical system safety

Inputs to FHA, FTA and FMEA for 25.1309 / 23.2510 compliance of electrical systems.

Data approval

Findings of compliance on FAA Form 8110-3 for drawings, reports and test plans within delegated authority.

Regulatory Basis

Regulatory basis we work to

  • 14 CFR 25.1351 through 25.1365 (electrical systems and equipment)
  • 14 CFR 25.1431 (electronic equipment) and 25.1301 / 25.1309
  • 14 CFR 25.1701 through 25.1733 (EWIS)
  • 14 CFR 23.2500, 23.2505, 23.2510 and 23.2525 (Part 23 systems)
  • AC 25.1701-1 (EWIS), AC 43.13-1B / 2B practices
  • RTCA DO-160G environmental qualification
Engagement

How an engagement runs

  1. 01Certification basis and compliance checklist agreed with the ACO or ODA.
  2. 02Design review of schematics, wiring diagrams, ELA and installation drawings.
  3. 03Test plans and conformity support for ground and flight tests.
  4. 04Compliance findings and 8110-3 approval within authority.
FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What does an FAA Electrical DER approve?

Within their delegation, an Electrical DER finds compliance and approves electrical systems and equipment installation data, such as load analyses, wiring diagrams and installation drawings, on behalf of the FAA.

Do you support STCs?

Yes. Electrical installation is part of almost every avionics, cabin and antenna STC. We support the electrical scope or lead certification for the whole STC.

Can one firm cover electrical, software and HIRF/lightning?

Yes. Our principal holds Electrical and Software DER authority plus HIRF and lightning, so an avionics installation can be covered without coordinating several consultants.
